International Albariño Day
August 3, 2013

International Albarino Day

TAPAS announces the second International Albariño Day, August 3, 2013: A celebration of the Albariño grape. We are encouraging everyone to open a bottle of Albariño, enjoy the fun, and share their experiences online with the hashtag #AlbarinoFiesta .

International Albariño Day was inspired by the Albariño Wine Festival held in the small coastal town of Cambados, Spain during the first week of August. Albariño is traditionally grown in Rias Baixas, a wine region in Galicia in northwestern Spain, and produces crisp, acidic white wines ideal for summer evenings and seafood pairings. It is also grown in Portugal, where it is known as Alvarinho.  Now it is being grown in North America, so we’re celebrating with International Albariño Day.

For 2013, we decided one day wasn't enough, so we've set aside five days for all the festivities, from July 31 through August 4, corresponding to the Cambados Albariño Wine Festival in Galicia, Spain.

Cambados is located in the Arousa estuary in an area known as Salnés, famous for its sunsets and home to the poet Ramón Cabanillas. The landscape is full of vines where the grapes of the celebrated Albariño wine ripen. The sun terraces of stone manor houses, originally built as defense towers, look out over beautiful landscapes. Cambados celebrates its 61st wine festival which is now of international significance, and the well organized wine-tasting sessions attract true gourmets and connoisseurs. This is a time for celebrating the delights offered by both sea and land in the very heart of the "Rías Baixas."

Whether or not you attend an organized event, use #AlbarinoFiesta to connect with fellow Albariño enthusiasts worldwide!

International Albariño Day Events

TAPAS will be providing wine at the upcoming Society of Wine Educators Conference at Sea World in Orlando, Florida from July 31 to August 2.  We will be putting a special focus on Albariño during the International Tasting, where we will be pouring Albariños and other wines from TAPAS members in a walk-around tasting with several wineries and distributors.

In San Luis Obispo, CA, alegria wine and ware will have a "house selection" Albariño available, in addition to the week's wine menu, from July 31 through August 2.  On Saturday, August 3, they will have a special Albariño three-wine flight available, with wines from Spain's Rias Baixas, Portugal, and California.

In honor of the Cambados tradition, Qupé and Verdad, in Los Olivos, CA, are showcasing the wonderfully light and crisp Albariño that they produce under their Verdad label, just like they do in Galicia, for International Albariño Day, July 31st to August 3rd. They will have tastings of their different Albariño bottlings paired with Spanish cheeses, culminating with the official Celebration of Albariño on Saturday, August 3rd! All Albariño will be discounted 10% for 6-11 bottles, and 12 bottles or more will be 20% off!

Fellow TAPAS member Longoria, just down the street, will also be offering their 2011 Reserve Albariño and 2012 Albariño from July 31st to August 2nd, and also on August 4 at their tasting room in downtown Los Olivos. (They will be closed August 3rd for a private Wine Club Event.) Special discounts on these limited production wines will be available.

Celebrate International Albariño Day in Paso Robles on August 3rd with Bodegas Paso Robles, Derby Wine Estates, and PasoPort at Artisan restaurant. Artisan will be pouring an Albariño flight from all three wineries throughout the day.  Come meet the winemakers that night from 6 pm on, and discuss the differences in the three styles.  See you there.

In Winters, California, a town rich with Spanish heritage, both local wineries Berryessa Gap Vineyards and Turkovich Family Wines will mark International Albariño Day by introducing their first ever publicly available releases of Albariño, and Route 3 Wines whose Tasting Room is at RootStock in Winters will be featuring their already released and popular 2012 Albariño.  Though the climate of Winters and western Yolo County is quite different to the coastal region of Spain this grape hails from, the Albariño wines being produced here are showing great promise like other Spanish varietals grown in Winters including Tempranillo, and the warm summer evening definitely calls for a light, crisp wine.  Turkovich Family Wines and Berryessa Gap both produce Tempranillo which they highlight during an annual “Tempfest” in Winters in early September.

At Berryessa Gap’s tasting room located at 15 Main Street visitors will have a chance to taste and purchase the very limited release of their delightfully crisp and aromatic 2012 Albariño.   Winemaker Nicole Salengo will be on hand to discuss this wine as well as the 2013 harvest, highlighting the outlook for Albariño in the region.   Special food pairings are being created by Anderson Family Catering who will be in front of Berryessa Gap on Main Street from 4:30-8:30pm offering seafood delights such as fish tacos, barbequed oysters, and a selection of spicy shrimp.  Tasting room hours on Saturday August 3rd are 11:00am – 9:00pm.

Turkovich Family Wines, located at 304 Railroad Avenue, is celebrating International Albariño Day by releasing their first ever Albariño Wine. Come in to the tasting room on August 3rd from 11:00am to 9:00pm for a special release of their new wine paired with homemade ceviche.  Enjoy the sounds of Spanish music and share stories about summer adventures.

Route 3 Wines, located at 22 Main Street, will be pouring their Albariño complimented by a tasty assortment of Spanish specialties.  Relax and enjoy a Spanish style afternoon of sipping regional wines and sampling the flavors of Spain as we celebrate the delightful Albariño grape.   Route 3’s tasting room hours on Saturday, August 3rd are 10:00am-9:00pm.  Live music will be featured outside from 4:00pm-9:00pm.

Many excellent eateries in Winters are also joining the festivities by featuring both Berryessa Gap and Turkovich Albariño with special menu items highlighting seafood or Spanish inspired dishes.

The Buckhorn Steakhouse will be outside on Main Street grilling jumbo prawns and BBQ oysters; also always available is their signature calamari dish.

The Putah Creek Café will feature seabass prepared with Albariño wine, garlic, Italian parsley, butter served with freshly made lemon fettuccine.

Ficelle will have their typical Spanish / Latin inspired tapas, including Gambas al Ajillo (shrimp) served sizzling in extra virgin olive oil with garlic and red pepper flakes and Canelone del Mar, crab and shrimp stuffed pasta baked in lemony Fontina leek cream.  Ficelle’s Saturday hours are 5:30pm-9:30pm.

Preserve Public House, located at 200 Railroad Avenue will prepare a fresh house made gazpacho and shrimp dish to compliment Berryessa Gap and Turkovich Family Wines Albariño.  Preserve’s Saturday hours are 11am to 2am.
