TAPAS members were featured on the Downtown Birmingham/Bloomfield website. The article "Toast the Unusual," by Eleanor and Ray Heald, focuses on "obscure and unexpected" varieties including Malvasia Bianca, Verdelho, Albariño, Tempranillo, and others. It reviews wines from TAPAS members Tangent, Curran, Abacela, Bray, Bodegas Paso Robles, and Trenza.
Congratulations to three TAPAS members who were winners in the 7th Tempranillos al Mundo competition being held this week in New York City!
Stay tuned for more news from the event.
Congratulations to TAPAS member Chuck Hovey of Hovey Wine! His 2009 Tempranillo - Rolleri Cuvee was rated 90 by Wine Enthusiast Magazine.
Here's some background, courtesy of the Hovey Wine online store:
In 1995 the Rolleri family planted one of the first Tempranillo vineyards in California on their ranch just above Angels Camp in Calaveras County with assistance from then-Stevenot winemaker, Chuck Hovey. Chuck made the first vintage for Stevenot Winery in 1998, one of the few flagships to reintroduce Tempranillo to California. The 2008 vintage, now under his own label, is the 11th consecutive year he has made Tempranillo from grapes from this vineyard.
The wine exhibits all the classic Rioja and Ribera del Duero blueberry and cigar box fruit profiles that make this Spanish variety so complex and intriguing. The grapes were gently crushed and fermented in small open fermenters and pressed off to small French and American oak barrels for barrel aging for 18 months prior to bottling in May 2009. Mocha, licorice and blackberry and concentrated flavors of blueberry mingle with creamy oak and a silky layer of soft tannins to produce an exquisite experience for the palate, paired especially well with roasted meats and rich dishes.
TAPAS Amigo member Greg Jones of Cascade Environmental Geographics and Southern Oregon University was quoted in today's front-page article "Taste this: Climate change may redraw wine regions." Greg has been doing research on the effects of climate change on wine grapes for over ten years, and was listed by Decanter Magazine as one of the 50 most influential people in the world of wine.
TAPAS is proud to be a sponsor of the Seventh Annual Tempranillos al Mundo (Tempranillos to the World) international competition, organized by the Spanish Federation of Associations of Enologists (FEAE), with support from Vibrant Rioja, La Rioja Capital, Wines from Spain, and TAPAS.
The event takes place November 14-16, 2011 in New York City.
