Mark your calendar for the 2011 TAPAS Annual Membership Meeting and Dinner, 6:30 pm Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at the Kasbah Lounge in Tapa the World, Sacramento, California. The meeting is held every year during the Unified Wine and Grape Symposium, and is open to members, prospective members, and guests at no charge.
After the meeting, you're invited to join us for a sit-down, family style dinner. We're asking member wineries to bring wine to share. The dinner cost is $50 per person in advance, and you can reserve and pay online via the TAPAS Events page, where you'll find more details.
Congratulations to TAPAS Member Winery Berryessa Gap Vineyards, whose 2008 Rocky Ridge Collection Tempranillo has been selected as one of the West Coast's best wines in the newly published 2010 San Francisco Chronicle list of Top 100 Wines. The Yolo County winery was founded in 2002 with the simple goal of producing “good wine for regular people.” Inclusion on the Chronicle list adds to a long line of awards earned by Berryessa Gap wines at competitions across the country over the past several years.
Since 2007, the Chronicle Wine Section team has had the annual task of tasting thousands of wines from California, Washington and Oregon to compile its Top 100 Wines list, considering quality, price and innovation. The list serves as a buying guide for wine enthusiasts throughout Northern California and beyond.
“Berryessa Gap finds this distinction exciting and humbling, and we would like to congratulate the other wineries also selected this year,” said winery representative Corinne Martinez.“We hope this recognition will encourage wine lovers to discover and experience our wines, as well our charming town of Winters and our emerging wine region.”
The forbearers of Berryessa Gap Vineyards pioneered wine-grape growing in Western Yolo County in 1969 with the creation of a grapevine nursery. This same innovative spirit eventually led their successors to begin producing wine in 2002. Today the winery grows its own grapes on the Cobel Ranch located near the Berryessa Gap area west of Winters.
Grape grower Dan Martinez points out that “the Cobel Ranch was formerly utilized to breed nationally recognized sheep, and now we are producing award-winning wines from the ranch.” Martinez is challenged by the land's thin soil, but believes the site gives him the control necessary to grow superior fruit. “If you go to sleep, you can lose it all, but if you pay attention, the results are unbelievable,” he says.
Berryessa Gap’s approach to winemaking lies in the life experiences of winemaker Mike Anderson. Anderson was raised in a family that valued and contributed to California's winemaking history, and today he is a viticulture researcher at the University of California, Davis. “My heart is filled with history,” says Anderson, “but my eye is focused on sound science.” It is the marriage of his winemaking and Martinez' fruit that brings distinction to the wines of Berryessa Gap.

We've had a lot of new members from Texas recently, thanks largely to the efforts of TAPAS founding members Jim and Karen Johnson of Alamosa Wine Cellars. Could Tempranillo become the new "Texas Cab"?
As part of the upcoming 2010 Grayson College Enology Outreach Seminar Profiles Series, there will be a Tempranillo Symposium, to be held November 22, 2010 at the Vineyard at Florence, Florence TX. The three featured presenters will be Simon Arina Robles, Bodega Baigorri, Rioja, Spain; Jim Johnson, Owner/winemaker at Alamosa Wine Cellars; and Dan Gatlin, Owner/Winemaker at Inwood Estates Winery. The session will look at the variety from its historic roots to viticulture clones, production yields, and flavor sensory analysis. Marketing and price points will also be discussed. The fee for the event will be $100.
